I found my first Ideal Pegaso in a swap meet in the States and was excited as I didn't know that there were any Pegaso miniatures available. Before acquiring the Ideal Pegaso, I bought a few of the Highway Pioneers 1/35 scale kit of the Ferrari Barchetta.

Since it was also by Touring it was close to the Pegaso Tibidabo and some body putty and a lot of hours sculping, shaping and sanding created three Tibidabo editions that Pegaso never made: a luxury, sport and competition version. Surprisingly, I never made the Tibidao itself, but I still have one of the old Ferrari Barchetta kits.


One of the problems with old miniatures is whether to preserve the original intent or to make it more realistic. For example, the wire wheels on the Ideal are not realistic and buying a simple plastic model with good wire wheels would be bettter even if you throw the donor car away and just use the wires and tires. Another thing on the Ideal, the exhaust end should be flattened, drilled out and painted black inside. Also a license plate would add a nice touch and finally add chrome trim around the windows and actually put windows in via some thin plastic. These tips would certainly make the model more accurate, but would not preserve the originality.

I finally finished my "Ideal" Pegaso. It is amazing that standing next to the green plastic finish, how good it looks. I painted it a metallic beige with a terra cotta leather interior and dark brown floor mats. I also used Bare Metal Chrome foil on all the real chrome surfaces. For a more aggressive look, I removed the side exhaust pipes and put on under frame dual exhausts like some of the later cars. So far I put a rear window in; maybe some day I'll finish the windows, but they are tough to work on.


Eventually, I learned of 1/43 Pegaso kits and miniatures and acquired the Metal 48 model of the original Z102. After that, the collecting and building really began with all the other 1/43 scale models on the market. I've now moved into the new 1/35 slotcar field and am constructing a Pegaso Thrill Berlinetta. Along the way, the Pegaso collecting bug really took hold with miniatures of the Pegasus itself -the diecast fantasy models are a good source. I then started collecting photos of the Pegasus in fountains. Naturally, Pegaso memorabilia itself was on the agenda with various lapel pins, ties, pens, cigarette lighters, etc. While these were from the latter truck era, it didn't matter as they all said the magic words, PEGASO. I've since collected magazines and programs that featured the Pegaso Sports cars and attended the Pebble Beach concours that featured Pegaso cars, a Pegaso nirvana all by itself.


Este juguete fabricado en Estados Unidos en los años cincuenta es una de las muestras más tempranas de la incorporación de Pegaso a la imaginería del automóvil.

Realizado en plástico sin pintar, el modelo representa un Pegaso Z-102 Touring coupé y se monta y desmonta con facilidad, habiendo desaparecido la mayor parte de su producción después de haber amenizado los juegos de una generación de escolares. Los pocos ejemplares que han sobrevivido en buen estado cambian de manos en un mercado muy reducido entre los coleccionistas y seguidores de la marca Pegaso.

El ejemplar a la vista del lector pasó a mis manos procedente de un coleccionista norteamericano, que lo guardó durante años antes de encontrar un segundo coche en su caja de origen, circunstancia que le permitió desprenderse del primero.

El coche se encontraba completo y en buen estado, aunque el plástico liso de la carrocería, de color verde, se había descolorido en su parte exterior por la exposición a la luz. Como si se tratara de un coche de verdad, decidí que valía la pena darle un mejor aspecto sin modificar su originalidad y lo desmonté por completo, tarea sumamente sencilla con ayuda de un simple destornillador, ya que la carrocería está fijada a la plataforma únicamente por cuatro tornillos. El resto de las piezas de plástico (faros, pilotos, calandra, etc.) se ensamblan a presión.


El modelo, aunque es rico en detalles, como las salidas de aire próximas a la luneta trasera, la calandra con intermitentes o los tubos de escape integrados en los laterales de la carrocería, no pretende una gran fidelidad de acabado y tratándose de un juguete destinado a un público infantil no sería justo reprocharle algunos errores, como el bloque motor de seis cilindros en línea o la suspensión trasera de ballestas, que hacen pensar que se trata de elementos compartidos con otros juguetes del mismo fabricante.

Confié la carrocería y el interior a un modelista profesional, que aplicó una pintura de base para una mejor adherencia de las siguientes capas de pintura sobre el plástico. Para la carrocería eligió un color azul, próximo al color del escudo Pegaso, y el interior lo decoró diferenciando los asientos, para los que simuló un cuero rojo, del resto del interior en negro mate. Luego destacó en gris metalizado la calandra, las llantas de radios, las salidas de los tubos de escape y algunos detalles, como las salidas de aire cerca de la luneta trasera y el escudo Touring.
